Skin is the body’s biggest organ, so it should matter what you put on it, said Katie Wynne, co-owner of Veg Out Organics.

In 2021, Wynne and her husband, Brad, launched Veg Out Organics, a plant-based skin care line. Their products are vegan, nontoxic, cruelty-free and organic.

“What you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body,” she said. “We know that organic produce is better for you than conventional, so organic and clean skin care is better than products with lots of chemicals and harmful additives.”

When considering a skin care product, Katie Wynne added, every ingredient — as well as how the plants were grown — should matter.

Before the Virginia Beach couple started Veg Out Organics, Brad Wynne owned Veg Out Gardens , a company that built, installed and maintained organic vegetable gardens both residentially and commercially. The couple decided to close that business at the end of 2023. In 2019, the couple had started pivoting their efforts to growing hemp.

“The pandemic shutdown caused us to reevaluate our product line,” he said. “During the shutdown, we decided to get into skin care as people were really focused on self-care.”

All of Veg Out Organics’ products have CBD in them, but zero THC, the high-inducing cannabis compound. Brad Wynne explained that CBD comes from the hemp plant, which produces low levels of THC, specifically below 0.3%. Marijuana plants have higher levels of THC.

Veg Out Organics is a waterless skin care line. Katie Wynne said most cosmetics list water as their first ingredient, so consumers are paying mostly for water and not the “good” ingredients.

“Having waterless products allows a better absorption of all the active ingredients. They’re not diluted,” she said. “We use aloe vera juice as our base for most of our products, which is known for healing and nurturing properties. It’s more expensive but has much better benefits.”

Additionally, all the products are white because they’re free of bleach, dyes and synthetic fragrances.

The skin care collection offers nine face and body products. The company’s most popular, the magnesium body lotion, is used for aches, pain and overall inflammation.

“I call it our miracle cream,” Katie Wynne said. “We all need more magnesium, and it plays a vital role in our body functioning like it should. We can’t make official medical claims, but customers have said it’s helped with eczema, nerve pain, neuropathy, psoriasis, migraine headaches and restless leg syndrome.”

Other stand-outs include the Glow Bright Cleanser, Chill Mode Body Oil and Vitamin C+ Serum.

Veg Out Organics can be found in over 160 stores nationwide. Locally, the products are in 20 stores such as The Beach Nut, The Green Cat, Anderson’s Garden Center, A.R.E. Bookstore, Lemon Cabana and others. The Wynnes said the company recently signed on with a distributor in the Midwest to help it expand into larger retail chains.

“People are aware of the benefits of eating natural, organic food and trying to stay away from harmful chemicals and processed food,” Brad Wynne said. “We believe skin care must follow these same principles.”
