RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Virginia Republicans are taking a victory lap with President-elect Donald Trump’s White House win.

While the commonwealth didn’t support Trump, Republican Party of Virginia Chairman Rich Anderson says he will deliver on promises for this state.

“Virginia hosts so many military installations and defense activities that any sort of strengthening of the United States military in the coming administration will only help Virginia and our economy,” said Rich Anderson, RPV Chairman.

Anderson says Trump performed well in Virginia General Assembly districts that flipped to Democrats in recent years or Republicans currently hold by slim margins.

The GOP is now focusing on the 2025 elections, how many seats it can snag and whether it can keep the governor’s mansion.

“We intend to build on that in ways where next year’s outcome will be very favorable who are running for our three statewide electoral offices as well as Virginia House of Delegates,” said Anderson.

It’s a much different story right now for Democrats in Virginia.

They’re happy they were able to deliver the state’s 13 electoral college votes for Harris but gutted by the overall outcome.

Most wouldn‘t’ talk on camera, but Harris’s surrogate, Mayor Levar Stoney, did say this.

“I also recognize that the result of the presidential race did not go the way we wanted to in some cases last night,” said Mayor Levary Stoney, (D) City of Richmond.

Governor Glenn Youngkin and Trump became closer friends this year, too.

Should Youngkin take a position in the administration, he would leave the governorship behind and hand over the reigns to the lieutenant governor.

“It would be highly unusual if he took a cabinet post, especially because governorship is his first elected office,” said Larry Sabato, UVa Center for Politics Executive Director.

The Virginia Board of Elections will meet to certify the results of this election on Dec. 2.
