CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The clock is ticking and a potential federal government shutdown is looming.

Currently, the House approved a short-term funding bill, called a continuing resolution, which would fund the government until September. That bill is being sent over to the Senate, but Democrats are not likely to pass it.

“We don’t just take the House’s work product and rubber stamp it and they shouldn’t expect us to. So I’m gonna vote against moving to the House bill,” said Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.

Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner are not in favor of the House’s version of a continuing resolution bill.

“This continuing resolution is just awful,” Warner said.

While it would keep the government from a shutdown Friday, Kaine says it is not worth it.

“It was insulting, not just to Virginia, not just to veterans, not just to priorities I care about like national defense, but it’s insulting to the Senate for the House to pass this thing and say, okay, we did it with no Democratic involvement,” Kaine said.

Kaine also added that voting in another continuing resolution is simply just a band-aid and is a bad way to run the government.

“Continuing resolutions are something that we do temporarily until we get a budget,” Kaine said.

Instead, Kaine is hoping for a more normal budget, an appropriations deal.

“The difference between appropriations and CR is appropriations is you’re driving, looking through the windshield at what’s coming at you. CR is you’re driving, looking through the rearview mirror about what’s already behind you,” said Kaine.

Warner is hoping that some Republicans will side with Senate Democrats.

“I just ask them to find the courage to vote for what you know is right and to not allow this power grab, unconstitutional power grab, to continue,” Warner said.
