(WDBJ/Associated Press) - A young cancer survivor, who was a guest at President Trump’s speech before a Joint Session of Congress Tuesday because of the boy’s support of law enforcement, is also being honored by law enforcement agencies nationwide. President Trump announced Devarjay “DJ” Daniel would be sworn in by new Secret Service Director Sean Curran as a member of the force. Trump says the boy wants to be a police officer someday. Good evening all. Like many of you, I did not know DJ until we witnessed him receiving the honorary Secret Service Award from the President Tuesday night. His reaction was priceless, and I along with millions of others found myself moved to tears. Over the past few days, I have been gathering more information about this incredible young man who has been bravely fighting this awful disease for five years. I saw the attached clip of him sharing in his own words his part of the journey. While there has been sadness along the way, there has also been an abundance of joy. DJ has a dream of becoming a police officer one day, and by God’s grace, I truly pray that this aspiration becomes a reality for him. In recognition of his courage and spirit, DJ has been made an honorary police officer at numerous agencies across this great country. Today, I am proud to announce that the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia, will be joining agencies across Virginia and throughout the nation honoring him by making DJ an honorary Deputy for our agency. In the coming days, we will ensure he receives his credentials. I ask that you join me in congratulating DJ on this well-deserved honor. Additionally, please keep him and his family in your prayers as he continues to push forward in his goal of becoming a police officer and battling this terrible disease that affects so many. DJ is truly a definition of a hero, and I have no doubt that many Sheriffs and Chiefs across the country have their eyes on him. May God continue to bless him and his family on this journey. The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is proud to join the Page County Sheriff’s Office in recognizing DJ Daniel, a young man whose admiration for law enforcement and unwavering strength in his battle against brain cancer have touched hearts across the nation.
