ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — Lisa Coons resigned as Virginia's superintendent of public instruction on Friday, almost two years after replacing another person who served for just over a year, state officials confirmed to 7News on Monday. Coons shared a letter to Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) staff on March 14 announcing her decision to "pursue new professional opportunities." The former Tennessee chief academic officer was appointed as Virginia's 27th Superintendent in April 2023, a role that oversees all public schools, adult education, and vocational schools in the state, according to a statement at the time. "I am proud of the progress we have made together to support student achievement, further educational excellence, and build strong partnerships across the Commonwealth," Coons wrote. "I am also deeply grateful to the staff at VDOE and the educators across the Commonwealth, whose dedication has inspired me daily." In her role, Coons oversaw education for over 1.2 million students enrolled in the state. Deputy Superintendent Emily Anne Gullickson will lead the agency in the interim, and the VDOE website was updated to reflect the changes on Monday afternoon. Coons stepped in for Jillian Balow, who was appointed in January 2022 during Governor Glenn Youngkin's first year in office, but stepped down in March of 2023. It has been my great honor to serve the students, families, and educators of Virginia in my time leading the Department of Education under Governor Youngkin. After careful consideration, I have decided to pursue new professional opportunities, and I wish Governor Youngkin and his administration the best. I am proud of the progress we have made together to support student achievement, further educational excellence, and build strong partnerships across the Commonwealth. I am also deeply grateful to the staff at VDOE and the educators across the Commonwealth, whose dedication has inspired me daily. Serving as the Superintendent of Public Instruction has been an incredible privilege. I remain deeply committed to improving outcomes for students and communities as I take on my next role. The children and educators of Virginia will always hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to following their continued success in the future.
