I’m a firm believer that every trip to New York City should include seeing a Broadway show. As a transplanted New Yorker, it’s one of the things I still miss most about the city. Although I’ve seen great touring companies around the country, nothing compares to the energy of Broadway.

Every time I go to New York, I try to see at least one show. When I went back last month, it had been so long since I had been there, I decided to see more than one but I had no idea where to start. I knew I wanted musicals but which ones? The last one I had seen was & Juliet , which I loved so much, I brought my husband back to see it again. A number of new shows had opened since then and I didn’t know a lot about them.

SUFFS

I can’t recommend this enough. Even if you think you know the history (her-story?) of the suffrage movement and how women got the vote, you will be blown away by those who fought so hard for so long. This is an emotional, funny, sad, powerful story with amazing music and strong performances. It should be required viewing for every American. I even went to Central Park to see the Women’s Rights Pioneers monument after watching this video on The Broadway Collection.

MJ The Musical

MJ The Musical is a celebration of Michael Jackson.

Wow! The singing and dancing is so good, it’s easy to forget you’re not watching the real Michael Jackson. This is the kind of show where the audience can’t help singing along and it’s such a special experience. After the show, I watched this video on The Broadway Collection and it added a whole other layer to what I had just seen.

I had read the book and seen the movie but I was most inspired to see the circus-themed show because of the breathtaking acrobatics in this video on The Broadway Collection site. Watching the actors perform these feats live, from just a few rows away, was magical.

The Broadway Collection

After seeing the shows, I wanted to learn more about The Broadway Collection and get the behind-the-scenes scoop on them . I sent some questions to VP Bob Hofmann and here’s what he had to say.

Tell us a little about The Broadway Collection. For people who’ve never been on the site, how would you describe it?

The Broadway Collection makes it easy to explore and buy tickets for Broadway, Off-Broadway, The Met Opera, and the NYC Ballet. We provide videos, photos, descriptions, age recommendations, run times, theater locations, FAQs, and news, all translated into eight languages. Authorized by the shows and theater owners, we offer direct, secure links to buy tickets without excessive fees.

When was it started?

Launched in 2005, The Broadway Collection began as a B2B marketing program to build a global distribution network, helping travel companies sell Broadway in advance to visitors. While still serving wholesale travel buyers, it has evolved to assist travelers directly.

Who started it?

The Collection was founded as a marketing arm of Broadway Inbound, a subsidiary of The Shubert Organization. Charles Flateman, Bruce Amick, and I co-founded it.

What was the vision for The Broadway Collection?

With over 60 million visitors to NYC each year, Broadway draws a large share—60-65% of the Broadway audience is visitors. Yet many visitors who expect to see a show don’t. Our vision is to change that, making it easier for travelers to experience Broadway, an essential part of NYC’s cultural fabric.

Can you share any Broadway trends you’re noticing?

Variety is key. There’s something for everyone, from traditional productions to more innovative, diverse shows.

Popular shows change frequently. While well-known titles attract strong traffic, visitors are also exploring newer shows like Hadestown , & Juliet , Little Shop of Horrors , The Outsiders , Hell’s Kitchen , and SIX , as well as The Met Opera and NYC Ballet. Exploration is trending.
