Wando’s boys tennis team was looking to make history on Thursday afternoon, but a perennial powerhouse from the Upstate had other ideas.

The Warriors took on J.L. Mann in the Class AAAAA Division I finals at the University of South Carolina indoor tennis center in Columbia, hoping to win their first state title. That was not to be as the Patriots dominated play and posted a 5-1 win. It was the fifth consecutive state championship for J.L. Mann (23-0).

Wando, which lost 4-2 to J.L. Mann last year, fell to 0-7 in state championship matches and finished the season with an 18-1 record.

Wando’s lone win came at No. 1 singles when Owen Griffiths was awarded a victory when Mann’s Christian Holloway retired in the second set while leading the match. The Patriots won four other singles matches, as well as No. 2 doubles, in convincing fashion.

Spring sports playoffs

Weather has played a role in the early stages of the spring sports playoff season for Lowcountry teams. Rain and bad weather forced the postponement of several games in baseball, softball and soccer, as well as in boys tennis.

The schedule is back on track, and with better weather expected over the next two weeks, the championships should be completed as scheduled.

The state finals in soccer are May 22-24 at Memorial Stadium in Columbia. Baseball and softball's best of three championship series begin on May 24 for baseball and May 26 for softball.

The state track and field championships are May 15-17 in Columbia.

The SCHSL state golf tournaments for all classifications will begin May 19 at various golf courses around the state. All tournaments are 36-hole events except for Class A, which is 18 holes.
