Wando’s boys tennis team was looking to make history on Thursday afternoon, but a perennial powerhouse from the Upstate had other ideas. The Warriors took on J.L. Mann in the Class AAAAA Division I finals at the University of South Carolina indoor tennis center in Columbia, hoping to win their first state title. That was not to be as the Patriots dominated play and posted a 5-1 win. It was the fifth consecutive state championship for J.L. Mann (23-0). Wando, which lost 4-2 to J.L. Mann last year, fell to 0-7 in state championship matches and finished the season with an 18-1 record. Wando’s lone win came at No. 1 singles when Owen Griffiths was awarded a victory when Mann’s Christian Holloway retired in the second set while leading the match. The Patriots won four other singles matches, as well as No. 2 doubles, in convincing fashion.
