The weather is warming and the trees are starting to bloom, which means Illinois residents can finally crawl out of their winter hibernation and enjoy some sunshine.

Spring is the perfect time to explore the city's famous museums, and luckily, many are offering freebies throughout April.

Here's what to know about the museums' free days, discounts and admission.

Adler Planetarium



1300 S. Lake Shore Dr.

Illinois residents can enjoy free admission (with proof of residency) every Wednesday from 4-10 p.m. They may also upgrade to a Museum Entry +2 pass at a discounted price.

Illinois teachers get in free at all times, while active-duty U.S. military, national guard, reserve and military veteran personnel and their families can receive up to five complimentary tickets.

Shedd Aquarium



1200 S. Lake Shore Dr .

The aquarium offers free nights for Illinois residents on select days throughout the year. These free nights will take place this month on April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 5-9 p.m. Tickets purchased online will be accompanied by a $5 convenience fee, while tickets booked over the phone at 312-939-2438 will have no fee.

The aquarium also offers daily free and discounted admission to those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits). You only need to present your EBT card, and you can get up to four discounted tickets. Educators from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, police officers, firefighters and active-duty U.S. military personnel also receive free admission.

Museum of Contemporary Art



220 E. Chicago Ave .

Illinois residents can visit the museum for free every Tuesday from 5-9 p.m.

Admission is free every day for Illinois elementary and high school teachers, visitors 18 and under and visitors with disabilities and their caregivers. The offer also extends to police officers, firefighters, active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families.

Field Museum

Like many of the other museums in the city, the Field Museum offers free admission for Illinois residents on Wednesdays.

Chicago History Museum



1601 N. Clark St .

Illinois residents 18 and under and non-Illinois residents 12 and under get into the museum free every day. Upcoming free days for Illinois residents of all ages will be on April 16 and 30.

The museum also offers free admission for Illinois teachers, police officers, firefighters, active-duty military, veterans and more.

Griffin Museum of Science and Industry

Illinois residents can enter the museum for free on April 20 .

Active-duty U.S. military personnel and veterans, Illinois POWs, Chicago firefighters, Chicago police officers and Illinois teachers (Pre-K through 12th grade) can get in free any day of the week by completing this online request form or showing a valid I.D. when purchasing tickets onsite.

DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center

The museum is free to visit for all on Wednesdays, while free admission is available every day for military personnel, first responders, library pass holders, children 6 and under and more.

Chicago Holocaust Museum and Education Center



9603 Woods Dr .

Admission is free on the last Friday of every month, as well as for children 5 and younger. SNAP/EBT holders can get in for free with up to three guests, while active and retired military personnel and visitors with disabilities are eligible for a 50% discount on admissions.

This museum is extra special because it offers free admission every day for all visitors.

Swedish American Museum



5211 N. Clark St.

Admission is free for all visitors on the second Tuesday of every month. Children under 1 always get in free.
