North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning the ground is so dry after days without rain that the risk of wildfires is high. Yesterday evening, gamekeepers and farmers joined firefighters from three stations to combat a moorland fire which destroyed an area about 100m by 400m in remote upland above Richmond.. At midday today, grass in woodland near Dunnington burnt in what firefighters say as a “natural combustion”. York firefighters extinguished the blaze. Yorkshire Dales Park Authority told visitors barbecues and open fires of any kind were forbidden, cigarettes should be disposed of safely and fully. It also urged them to take all their litter home.
