"I get 70 miles to the gallon on this hog." Dumb and Dumber is one of the most quotable movies of all time, and it's easily one of my favorite movies ever. And every time I watch this classic 1994 film (which is more often than I'd care to admit!), I always wonder if the road trip our dumb heroes, Harry and Lloyd, take is actually doable. Also, is it even legal..? (Asking for a friend.)
Luckily for me, I don't have to be the one to trade in an '84 Sheepdog van with "some kid back in town" for a mini bike. Two fellas with Common Tread XP did that for me.
Yes. Two "dummies," Ari Henning and Zack Courts, recreated the trip from the plains of Nebraska to Aspen, Colorado—complete with the briefcase!
You may be wondering, "What did it actually take to make such a journey?"
Well, according to Courts, "All it took was three adults with adolescent minds and higher ups with enough, ahh, 'vision' to say yes to the project."
Once the guys were given the go-ahead, it was time to begin replicating the "hog." The bike ended up only costing them about $1,400 to make. (The original bike used in the film sold at auction for $50,000.) Then, they put together the iconic outfits, and they were ready to "saddle up, partner!"
You can watch their road trip below:
And yes, they did the road trip on a bike that makes a whopping six horsepower! By the time the duo had reached the "place where the beer flows like wine,", they had logged the following:
- 382 miles
- 7 gallons of gas
- 2.5 rear tires
- 54 mpg average
I applaud you, fellas. And I eagerly await the day you recreate the Sheepdog van!
