The Athletic has live coverage ofChiefs vs EaglesinSuper Bowl LIX, andKendrick Lamar’s halftimeperformance. With every Super Bowl comes opportunities for players to etch their name in the history books in more ways than one. While the ultimate goal may be the Lombardi Trophy, there have been a select few who’ve made a lasting impression on the big stage with a single play. Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will have no shortage of talent with a shot at achieving individual greatness, from players like Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts to Saquon Barkley, Chris Jones and even Harrison Butker, who made history nearly 12 months ago.
Longest run: Willie Parker, Pittsburgh Steelers
Where: Ford Field (Detroit, Mich.)
The Play: A Pro Bowler in 2006 and 2007, Parker’s claim to Super Bowl fame came two plays into the second half when he
exploded for a 75-yard touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks. The stunning run gave Pittsburgh a 14–3 lead it would eventually build upon en route to a 21-10 victory over Seattle and the franchise’s fourth championship.
2025 Spin: A 75-yard rush is by no means an easy feat, but of all the players in Super Bowl LIX who could achieve this feat, few candidates are better than Barkley. The Eagles star compiled a single-season record seven 60-plus yard touchdown runs in 2024, including a 60-yard score in the NFC Championship Game. He’ll have his work cut out for him considering the Chiefs allowed just one 40-plus yard carry this season and kept every opposing running back under 100 rushing yards this season, but for a locomotive like Barkley, the sky will certainly be the limit come Sunday, which will also be the running back’s 28th birthday.
Longest pass: Jake Delhomme to Muhsin Muhammad, Carolina Panthers
The Play: The Panthers tandem of Jake Delhomme and Muhsin Muhammad
connected for a 85-yard TD midway through the fourth quarter to give Carolina a short-lived 22-21 lead. The thrilling finish led to a 32-29 New England Patriots win but Carolina lore will forever remember Delhomme and Muhammad’s monster play in the quarterback and wide receiver’s only Super Bowl appearance.
2025 Spin: Super Bowl LIX boasts the potential both for this record to fall and to duplicate a high-scoring affair like the Pats and Panthers. Mahomes could hit paydirt via his top speedsters in rookie receiver Xavier Worthy or veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown; on the flip side, Hurts and wideouts A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are no stranger to turning in game-breaking plays of their own.
Longest field goal: Harrison Butker, Chiefs
Where: Allegiant Stadium (Paradise, Nev.)
The Play: It didn’t take Butker long to beat the record after
converting a 57-yard field goal in the third quarter against the San Francisco 49ers. Butker’s clutch kick relegated a then-record 55-yarder from the 49ers’ Jake Moody in the first half to a footnote, though the score eventually became its own (albeit a big one) after the Chiefs went on to win their second-straight Super Bowl in overtime.
2025 Spin: With a long of 53 yards and 21 FGs on 25 attempts this season, Butker can top his mark if his number is called once again in his fifth Super Bowl appearance. Eagles kicker Jake Elliott also has a chance at history against the record holder after converting 28-of-36 attempts, but his long this season of 50 yards would still be seven yards short of the Super Bowl record.
Longest kickoff/punt returns: Jacoby Jones, Baltimore Ravens; Kadarius Toney, Chiefs
Where: Levi’s Stadium (Santa Clara, Calif.); State Farm Stadium (Glendale, Ariz.)
The Play(s): Jones, who died last July, became a Ravens fan favorite after opening the second half with a
108-yard kickoff return in a classic 34-31 win over the 49ers. The 2012 All-Pro return specialist also hauled in a 56-yard TD in the second quarter to become the first player in Super Bowl history to log a TD reception and return in the same game.Ten years later, Toney, like Jones, turned in a crucial play when his team needed it most courtesy of a 65-yard punt return versus the Eagles. Toney’s fourth-quarter return ended at the Eagles’ five-yard line, positioning Kansas City for a touchdown that extended its lead in an eventual 38-35 win.
2025 Spin: The Chiefs no longer employ Toney so the challenge of besting his record or Jones’ will fall upon rookie returner
NikkoRemigio, unless the Eagles have something to say about it with return men Cooper DeJean or Isaiah Rodgers.Longest interception return: James Harrison, Steelers
Where: Raymond James Stadium (Tampa, Fla.)
The Play: As was often the case in his career, no one was able to get in Harrison’s way when the legendary Steelers linebacker intercepted Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner and
returned it endzone-to-endzone for a 100-yard touchdown. The “Immaculate Interception” gave the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year his second career TD and closed the first half with a bang as Pittsburgh turned its 17-7 halftime lead into a 27-23 title victory.
2025 Spin: Harrison’s spot will likely remain untouched but it wouldn’t be wise to look past either DPOY-caliber Eagles All-Pro Zack Baun or two-time Chiefs champion and Super Bowl LVII hero Nick Bolton as two linebackers who could come away with their own memorable picks.
Longest fumble return: Leon Lett, Dallas Cowboys
Where: Rose Bowl (Pasadena, Calif.)
The Play: Lett’s game-ending sack put the finishing touches on a dominant 52-17 win over the Buffalo Bills but the defensive tackle is likely best remembered for his historic lowlight. A Cowboys strip-sack in the fourth quarter set Lett up in prime position for a
64-yard fumble return that quickly turned disastrous after he was tackled just shy of scoring and fumbled, resulting in a touchback.
2025 Spin: In a showdown that would make Lett proud, the Eagles and Chiefs both deploy two of the NFL’s best defensive lines. Perennial All-Pro Jones and Chiefs DE George Karlaftis, as well as the Eagles’ Josh Sweat, could be in line to make history with a big-time recovery or scoop-and-score on Sunday.
