Live a good, relaxed, and content life.

Hygge (pronounced “Hoo-gah”) is a lifestyle trend that has become more and more popular in recent years—especially recently, mostly due to the pandemic. So, what exactly is hygge, and why should we try it?

Hygge can be an adjective, a verb, and a noun; it's a way of life for the Danish, and there's no one word or definition that encompasses the true concept. It has been referred to by some as “the Danish soul." Essentially, it means a quality of coziness and comfort that makes a person feel content.

Whenever we hear the word "hygge," we can't help but be reminded of the song of the same name from Frozen: The Broadway MusicalHave a listen below:

Hygge is a part of Danish culture that is interwoven into daily activities and everyday life, it originated in old Norwegian and first appeared in Danish writings at the end of the 18th century. There is no one how-to guide, although several popular books have been written dedicated to the art of achieving hygge. Developing a ritual, like a cup of hot tea and a book every night, taking a hike every weekend, or participating in evening meditation sessions, all play a part in achieving hygge.

Meik Wiking, an expert in hygge, is the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen and author of The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living. He told SELF, "The true essence of hygge is the pursuit of everyday happiness and it’s basically like a hug, just without the physical touch. We focus on the small things that really matter, including spending more quality time with friends and family and enjoying the good things in life."

Tips for Achieving Hygge:

  • Have enough time, do not rush the process
  • Keep it simple
  • Wear comfy clothing
  • Load up on comfortable blankets
  • Add scents, fresh flowers, incense, etc.
  • Practice mindful indulgence, not overindulgence
  • Use candles, fireplaces, and lighting to set the mood
  • Allow yourself to disconnect and embrace hygge

With cold weather moving in, and many people feeling extra levels of stress and anxiety this year, hygge sounds like something we can all use a little more of.
