A video on social media falsely claims that President Donald Trump is raising the minimum wage to $25 an hour, purportedly the largest increase in U.S. history. However, there have been no actions by the Trump administration to raise the minimum wage to this level. As previously reported by
the Commercial Appeal , Trump hinted in 2024 at increasing the minimum wage, but has made no efforts thus far in his presidency. According to the
United States Department of Labor , the federal minimum wage has remained at $7.25 since July 24, 2009. On March 14, Trump did the opposite of raising the minimum wage for private sector workers by
signing an executive order revoking a Biden executive order that raised the minimum wage for federal contractors to $17.75. According to the
Center for American Progress , corporations working on government contracts are free to cut wages for hundreds of thousands of workers, as the department of labor will no longer enforce the Biden-era rule. An
Obama order from 2014 remains in place, meaning some workers on federal contracts can now be paid a minimum of $13.30 an hour. Here's what else to know.
'Raise the Wage Act of 2025' aims to gradually increase minimum wage
The
Raise the Wage Act of 2025 , proposed by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Virginia) and Sen. Bernie Sanders — a fervent supporter of raising the minimum wage — was introduced on April 8. The act aims to gradually raise the minimum wage to $17 by 2030 and could potentially impact over 20 million workers in the U.S. "Raising the minimum wage is good for workers, good for business, and good for the economy," said Scott in a
news release . "When we put money in the pockets of American workers, they will spend that money in their communities." "In the year 2025, a job should lift you out of poverty, not keep you in it. At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, we can no longer tolerate millions of workers trying to survive on just $10 or $12 an hour," said Sanders in a
statement . "Congress can no longer ignore the needs of the working class of this country. The time to act is now."
Has Tennessee raised the minimum wage?
Unlike neighboring states such as Missouri ($12.30), Arkansas ($11), and Virginia ($12), Tennessee has no state minimum wage law. Therefore it must adhere to the federal minimum wage of $7.25, making it one of the states paying workers the least. There have been multiple attempts to increase the minimum wage in the Volunteer State. The most recent effort in 2025,
HB 1399 , aimed to raise the minimum wage to $20, potentially making Tennessee the state with the highest minimum wage in the country. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis), was introduced in February, however, has stalled for the year and will not be advancing.
