North Carolina senior Ethan Strand kicked off the 2025 NCAA indoor track campaign in December with a record performance in his first 3,000-meter race of the season, but that was just the opening act.

Less than two months later, the 22-year-old made history again with the fastest mile in NCAA history.

At this week’s 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships , Strand only will be focused one of the events — the 3,000 — where he enters as the No. 1 qualifier but will be looking to keep stride with his teammate and last year’s runner-up, Parker Wolfe.

The 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships will take place March 14-15 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Strand’s collegiate record in the 3,000 came Dec. 7 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston. He passed Wolfe late in the race and finished with a time of 7:30.15. The previous record was 7:36.42 by Northern Arizona’s Drew Bosley in 2024.

Strand and Wolfe (7:30.23) were two of four runners that day to best the former record.

Strand’s record performance in the mile Feb. 1 came at the same facility, this time for the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic. He finished the race in 3:48.32 to become the first collegiate runner to run a sub-3:50 mile. Two other athletes that day also beat the 3:50 mark.

Both record performances earned Strand the Atlantic Coast Conference Track Performer of the Week honors and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men’s National Athlete of the Week nod. The second record also included USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week recognition.

At the time of his mile record, Strand was third on the world's all-time list, but that has been a busy category across the globe in recent months. He’s now seventh when sorted by athlete and 10th when sorted by all performances, as fellow American Yared Nuguse owns four of the top eight times in history.

As of March 6, nine defending champions are expected to be back at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships to put their titles on the line. That does not include either the 3,000-meter race.
