Joann Fabrics' announcement that they were shutting down hundreds of stores rocked the country last week, especially following similar news from Big Lots, Macy's, Kohl's, JCPenney, and other retailers.

Fabric store officials highlighted the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain issues and inflation as reasons for their struggle over the last five years.

Here's which retailers have announced store closings in 2025 and if any are in Florida.

Joann Fabrics closing

Joann Fabrics announced last week it will close more than half of its locations , with Florida among the states hit hardest with 35 closures so far.

The retailer filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 after securing around $132 million in new financing to put towards its $1 billion debt. The company opted to go private again after becoming public in 2021.

However, a rash of store closures followed before the company again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January to "facilitate a sale process to maximize the value of its business."

Macy's stores closing

Macy's announced last month it would close 66 of the company's "non-go-forward" stores, including seven in Florida.

The "Bold New Chapter" for the company "is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth which includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period," Macy's said in an announcement.

JCPenney locations closing

JCPenney announced last week it will close eight locations this year, adding to the list of more than 200 closures planned.

No Florida stores are closing.

Big Lots are closing

In December, Big Lots announced it would be closing all of its stores. The company has been slowly closing stores across the U.S., including dozens in Florida, over the past several months as it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy .

Party City closing, some open

Party City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 21. The company will auction its assets, but if there's no sale, it will "initiate store closing sales to liquidate all of the Party City Group Companies’ retail and wholesale inventory and locations," according to the filing.

At the time of the filing, there were nearly 900 stores across the U.S. and Puerto, including 63 in Florida.

However, nine franchises that collectively own 29 Party City stores plan to remain open despite the closure of hundreds of others. None of those are in Florida.

Kohl's stores closing

Department store retailer chain Kohl's announced the closure of 27 of its stores by April 2025, detailing declining sales.

According to the Wisconsin-based company, these stores were not doing well. Kohl's said in November 2024 it expects 2024 sales to be down 7% to 8%. The retailer reports its full-year sales in February.

None of the 27 stores closing are located in Florida. These closings are in the following states — Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Walgreens closing

More Walgreens locations have closed or are closing — including one in Florida — as part of the company's plans to shutter more than 1,000 stores .

Walgreens announced in 2024 that it would be closing about 1,200 stores across the U.S. as it struggles with slumping consumer spending.

A Walgreens near the Centre of Tallahassee mall will close as of Feb. 25. A sign was posted outside the door to inform customers.
