About Italian national flag carrier ITA Airways

Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A., operating as ITA Airways, is Italy's government-owned national flag carrier. The airline was founded in 2020 following Alitalia, Italy's former national carrier's collapse, which had been in business since 1946.

The airline flies to over 70 destinations in Italy, Europe, and North America. ITA is based in Rome, with its central hub being Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). ITA also operates at Milan Linate Airport (LIN), which it sees as a secondary focus hub.

As you may know, the Lufthansa Group is looking to acquire an ownership stake in ITA Airways. However, the deal was recently put on hold by the Italian government because of "price disputes." This means that the deal will hang in the balance whether it will be finalized or not. If the deal gets the green light, ITA will soon jump ship to Star Alliance. But if it gets rejected, ITA will likely stay with SkyTeam.Do you think ITA Airways fits well with SkyTeam or Star Alliance?Disclaimer: The statement above is shared by one of our readers and does not necessarily reflect the views or ideas of our publication.

ITA joined the Skyteam Alliance on October 29, 2021, and in December of the same year, became the official airline of the Vatican, flying the Pope for ceremonial and state visits.

When the Pope is aboard an ITA aircraft, it is designated as being a "Volo Papale" (papal flight) followed by a serial number. On January 24, 2022, ITA announced that German national flag carrier Lufthansa was interested in becoming the airline's largest shareholder while leaving the Italian government with a minority stake.

On January 27, 2023, the Italian government and Lufthansa signed a letter of agreement allowing the German airlines to receive a minority stake of 41% of ITA, with the understanding that it would increase to 100%, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa.

The sale of ITA to Lufthansa received European Commission approval on July 3, 2024. ITA will leave the SkyTeam Alliance sometime in 2026 or 2027 and join in the .

The deal could be derailed if the two sides do not see eye to eye.
