WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A woman arrested in connection with the accidental shooting of a child earlier this month has made her first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court.

Ana Sorto Mejia , 50, of Wichita, is charged with one count of aggravated endangering a child.

The shooting happened on Friday, April 11, in the 2500 block of East Harry, just east of Interstate 135 . Police said a 4-year-old girl gained access to an unsecured firearm left out by her guardian and unintentionally shot herself in the torso while she was inside Tobacco, Beer, Plus Groceries. EMS transported the girl to the hospital in critical condition.

Mejia’s next court hearing is scheduled for May 12.

This is the third time a child has been shot in Wichita in less than three months. The other two incidents, involving a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old , were fatal.

Police are reminding the public about the importance of safely storing firearms, especially when children are present. The department is offering free gun locks , no questions asked.
