COLUMBIA FALLS — Cooper Ross kept the Frenchtown Broncs scoreless through the first five frames, and the Columbia Falls Wildcats mustered up enough offense to win the 2-1 pitcher’s duel at the Sapa-Johnsrud Invitational Saturday to extend their winning streak to 12 games. In a matchup of teams headed to next week’s state tournament, Ross surrendered just five hits to the Broncs (17-4), with one unearned run and struck out four across six innings. Reggie Sapa earned the save after pitching the seventh, but not without some traffic on the bases. After recording the first two outs, Sapa walked back-to-back batters that put the tying-run in scoring position before striking out the final batter. Brady Matson and Noah Upton each drove in a run for Columbia Falls (16-1). Dawson Rodoni drove in the lone run for the Broncs, a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Silas Zetterberg took the loss after giving up three hits, two earned runs and walked four in four innings. Rodoni pitched the final two frames allowing no hits and striking out four. Both Frenchtown and Columbia Falls won their conferences, earning berths into state at Hamilton beginning Thursday. The Wildcats will face Billings Central, which beat Dillon 8-1 in a play-in game Saturday. Polson plated all eight of its runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead before the Whitefish Bulldogs responded with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings in a back-and-forth game at Smith Fields. The Bulldogs (15-4) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after scoring five runs in their half of the third on four hits. Max Barone doubled to lead off the inning, Ryan Conklin singled before Christian Schwaderer drove both runners in on a triple. Polson (14-7) responded in the top half of the fourth inning, when the first batter Wyatt Wadsworth homered over the left field wall to get the Pirates on the board. Maddox Bird tripled and Landon Pablo singled home a run, but it was the Pirates patience at the plate that was the difference in the inning, capitalizing on five straight walks. Calvin Eisenbarth tied the game 8-8 in the fifth inning, blasting a 2-run home run to score Carter Godsey. Tait Orme broke the tie in the sixth inning with an RBI single and Reyd Hobart singled Orme home for the final run of the game. Orme, Eisenbarth and Schwaderer each finished with two RBIs. Rogan Lytle broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a 3-run double and the Eureka Lions used a late rally to beat the Corvallis Ble Devils at Smith Fields. Lytle finished with four RBIs, Michael Van Glider and Hunter Grieve added one RBI each as the Lions (12-5) were held to just four hits but walked 12 times. Lytle earned the win on the bump, going three innings with no earned runs and one hit. Lief Burow pitched the final three frames, dancing around five hits and two walks, striking out three. Adrian Cardullo was credited with the loss for Corvallis (6-12) allowing just one hit and three earned runs but walked eight batters. Cardullo finished with 10 strikeouts and added a hit and an RBI. Owen Marston and Waylon Lendak each drove in a run. The Lions have a play-in game at home Monday against Missoula Big Sky, with the winner advancing to state to play Billings Skyview in the first round at state. Bigfork travels to play Hamilton on Monday for another berth into state. That winner will face Belgrade in the first round.
