Traditionally, when a PGA pro steps up to the tee, the world around them stills and quiets. Cicadas, however, are not known for their good golfing etiquette. If they are near a golf course, they'll happily buzz away, concerned only with mating and avoiding real eagles and birdies. It's good news for golf fans, then, that the buzzy insects will likely not be making an appearance at the 2025 Memorial Tournament in Dublin. Here is what you need to know about them.
Will cicadas be at the 2025 Memorial Tournament?
The current brood of cicadas emerging from the ground in Ohio, Brood XIV, does not live in Dublin. They are emerging in southwest Ohio, as far east as Washington County and as far north as Greene County, The Dispatch previously reported. Periodical cicadas do not travel very far, likely less than half of a mile from where they emerge, according to the
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign . That means Dublin, around 60 miles away from Greene County, is likely safe from the cicada swarm. The next time Memorial Tournament attendees will have to contend with periodical cicadas is in 2038, when Brood X, which last appeared in 2021, emerges from the ground.
What's the deal with cicadas, anyway?
Periodical cicadas begin their life cycles as nymphs on trees, feeding on sap before dropping to the ground. Then, they dig into the ground and begin feeding on sap from plant roots,
according to the National Museum of Natural History . "They're just kind of chilling down there," Elizabeth Christopher, a program administrator at the Ohio Division of Forestry, previously told The Dispatch. They keep living underground for 13 or 17 years, depending on the brood. When it is time for them to emerge, they wait until the ground warms and then come out to mate, The Dispatch previously reported. The male cicadas then vibrate their bodies to make the bugs' iconic chirping or buzzing noise to attract a mate. Once they mate, the female lays her eggs on trees. The adult cicadas, which only live for three or four weeks after emerging from the ground, die shortly after.
