The Williams Baptist University women’s basketball team came up short against Columbia in the American Midwest Conference Tournament Final by the final score of 81-75 inside the Southerland-Mabee Center on Monday night. Carmen Taylor and Kaylee Isaacs tied for the team-lead with 17 points each. Charmen Taylor followed up with 16 on 7-for-14 shooting from the field. Monica Horne posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the contest, and Sara Crowe finished with 10 points off the bench. As a team, WBU went 28-for-69 (40.6 percent) from the field and 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) from three-point range. Williams also knocked down 13-of-14 free throws (92.9 percent). Columbia won the rebound battle 46-33. The Lady Eagles won the turnover battle by forcing 14 Cougar turnovers and turning them into 16 points. The game featured three ties and 14 lead changes. After Columbia jumped out to a 24-21 lead at the end of the first quarter, WBU took a 29-28 lead at the beginning of the second on a Charmen Taylor jumper. WBU extended its lead to six points on a Kaylee Isaacs layup, but the Cougars stormed back to take a 43-38 lead into the locker room. WBU took a 48-47 advantage halfway through the third on a Carmen Taylor layup. After the Cougars took the lead back with two minutes to play in the period, WBU went on an 8-0 run capped off by a Charmen Taylor trey to finish the period and take the lead 60-54. Columbia out-scored the Lady Eagles 27-15 in the final period to clinch the AMC Tournament title for the fourth straight season. The loss snaps a program-high 22 game win-streak for WBU. WBU drops to 27-4 overall. The Lady Eagles have already secured an automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament by winning the AMC regular season title.
