The Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry was reignited as the WNBA season began over the weekend. And while Clark’s flagrant foul on Reese certainly received plenty of attention after the Indiana Fever’s 93-58 win over the Chicago Sky, news that broke after the game made things a bit more serious. The Associated Press was among the first to report that the WNBA was investigating alleged racial comments aimed at Reese by fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Shortly after, the league released a statement. “The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms - they have no place in our league or in society. We are aware of the allegations and are looking into the matter.” The Fever, via Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Mel Raines, also released a statement regarding the alleged incident. “We are aware of the allegations of inappropriate fan conduct during yesterday’s game and we are working closely with the WNBA to complete their investigation. We stand firm in our commitment to providing a safe environment for all WNBA players.” Clark and Reese have both made efforts to keep their rivalry to basketball, but due to the often-divisive nature of social media, their clashes have often been accompanied by conversations about race, equality and fame. Reese has also been the target of racist comments in the past dating back to games between the two when they were at Iowa and LSU, respectively. Neither the WNBA or the Fever provided details about the alleged comments.
