EDWARDS COUNTY, Ill. (WEVV) — In the courtroom, both the defendant and victim’s families gathered as the prosecution asked the court to deny pre-trial release for Megan Valentine.

While in the courtroom, the prosecution argued that Megan Valentine was dangerous to herself, her family, and the public. The prosecutor stated that Valentine admitted that she had, “snapped”, and that evidence showed that she had looked up several articles days leading up to the incident regarding DNA on knives and sites regarding information on guns.

The defense stated, however, that Megan did not show signs of suicidal thoughts while in jail and that she was in an abusive marriage that led to an act of defense.

Ultimately the judge ruled that Megan would remain in the White County Jail pending trial.

Megan is facing several felony charges including first-degree murder, after police say Megan shot her husband from behind and killed him in their home on Election Day.

Michael Valentine was the Edwards County Circuit Court Judge. Michael was in his second term as judge and was previously the Edwards County State Attorney.

Due to Michael’s involvement in the county, the investigation was handed over to Illinois State Police. A judge out of Pulaski County will oversee the remainder of the court appearances.

Megan Valentine is set to appear in court again for her preliminary hearing on December 10th.
