A woman was arrested Tuesday after an investigation linked her to a dead animal found inside a restroom at Orlando International Airport in December, Orlando Police reported. Alison Agatha Lawrence, 57, was taken into custody in Clermont on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty — a third-degree felony — by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, according to a statement Wednesday from OPD. Lawrence is currently in custody at the Lake County Jail, according to jail records. WFTV reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources, that Lawrence allegedly drowned her dog in the airport bathroom. She was trying to board a flight but lacked the necessary paperwork to take it on the plane, the sources told the TV station. Police told the Orlando Sentinel on Wednesday that officers responded to the airport Dec. 16 in reference to a dead animal found by an employee inside a public women’s restroom located before security checkpoints. The police said an investigation tied Lawrence to the incident. No other information about the incident was provided by the agency, including what type of animal was found. Airport spokesperson Angela Starke said she didn’t have any details to share about the incident. The airport recommends passengers visit the TSA website to learn how to travel with small pets and that the FlyMCO website also has information for pet owners, she added. State Sen. Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach, said in a news release about WFTV’s reporting that the incident is an example of why his bill enhancing criminal penalties for animal cruelty offenses should be passed and signed into law. Leek introduced the bill, SB 502 , on March 4. “This is yet another horrible example of why I filed [the bill] related to animal cruelty, which strengthens criminal penalties for those who do harm to innocent animals,” Leek said.
