A Maryland woman accused of killing her mother, dismembering her body with a chainsaw and attempting to burn the remains on a barbecue grill will spend the rest of her days behind bars.Candace Craig, 46, faced charges of murder and related crimes in the May 2023 death of her elderly mother.Margaret Craig, 71, was a “giving, caring, loving, compassionate, and understanding woman who was killed [and] asphyxiated by her daughter,” according to Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy. The gruesome murder occurred after an argument about fraudulent credit card charges, prosecutors said. When Margaret Craig confronted her daughter and threatened to call the police, Candace Craig suffocated her with a trash bag, then dismembered and burned her body on a barbecue grill in an attempt to dispose of the remains, according to Braveboy.Police found the victim’s remains in the basement of her residence in early June 2023, approximately a week after the murder. In November 2024, a Prince George’s County jury convicted Candace Craig of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and disposing a body in an unauthorized place. On Wednesday, she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, following a recommendation by the state attorney’s office.During the hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Shauna Coleman said Candace Craig tried to place the blame on her three young daughters in an attempt to avoid punishment.“The fact that she would do this to her own children … her own mother, is beyond the realm of words,” Coleman said Wednesday, according to the Washington Post. “This happens in movies and books, not in real life.”
