The Hampton University women’s indoor track and field team captured the school’s first Coastal Athletic Association championship in any sport Thursday, winning a close meet at Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Hampton compiled two first-place finishes and five second-place finishes Thursday to help total 110 points and edge out Elon with 107.5 points. Defending champion Northeastern took third with 94.

Hampton entered the final event, the 4×400-meter relay, trailing Elon 104.5 to 102. But the Pirates’ Arriah Gilmer, Morgan Pruitt, Carmen PenaSoto and anchor Brianna Charles took second place in 3:43.29 to ensure the team crown.

Hampton’s 4×800 relay of Mekayla Wilson, Kayla Spencer, Kylee King and Jordan Mozie took first in 9:02.14.

Hampton’s Peninah Mutisya won the 3,000 meters in a meet-record 9:16.47 after setting a meet record of 15:45.87 in the 5,000 Wednesday.

Charles took second in the 60-meter dash, running 7.44. Mozie (2:09.70 in the 800) and Rochele Solmon (50 feet, 2.5 inches in the shot put) also were runners-up for the Pirates.

NC A&T men win CAA title at Beach



North Carolina A&T won its first CAA title in any sport, the men’s indoor title at Virginia Beach Sports Center.

The Aggies totaled 185 points, followed by Monmouth (146), Northeastern (140.5), fourth-place William & Mary (81), fifth-place Hampton (69), Campbell (30.5), Stony Brook (21) and Hofstra (19).

Northeastern’s Ben Godish, who won three golds and set two meet records, was the Men’s Athlete of the Meet.
In the men’s 800 meters, W&M’s Jonathan Kumer was first (1:49.88) and Hampton’s Mohammed Al-YaFee (1:51.41) third.

In the men’s 400, Hampton’s Justin Anderson (47.64) was second and W&M’s Austin Rice (47.79) third.

In the men’s 3,000, the Tribe’s Hayes Trapp was third in 8:15.55.

In the men’s high jump, Hampton’s Daven Gibson was third by clearing 2.02 meters.

In the men’s triple jump, Hampton’s Joseph Ernest was the runner-up at 14.92 meters.

In the heptathlon, W&M’s Brian Walsh scored 5,120 points for second place.

In the 4×800 relay, W&M (3:12.40) was second and Hampton (3:15.28) third.

Charlottesville to host TBT regional



The Basketball Tournament, an annual 64-team, $1 million winner-take-all event, announced that John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville will be a regional host from July 18-23.

Embrace The Pace, the Virginia alumni team, will host as the featured team in the eight-team Virginia Regional. Embrace The Pace will be led by 2019 national champions Kyle Guy and Kihei Clark. Guy, now on UVA’s staff, will be a player and co-general manager along with former Cavaliers assistant coach Johnny Carpenter.

The other regional hosts are Lexington (Kentucky), Louisville, Syracuse, Kansas City, Wichita, Charleston (West Virginia) and one site to be named. The winner of each bracket will advance to the quarterfinals July 29. The semifinals are July 31 and the final is Aug. 3.

Two VWU players make All-ODAC second team



Virginia Wesleyan’s Omari DeVeaux and Amari Moorer were named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference second team.

Hampden-Sydney fifth-year guard Adam Brazil was the Player of the Year for the first time and the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time. He is among the league leaders in scoring (18.2), assists (85), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.6), free-throw accuracy (.856), and steals (41).

Roanoke senior guard Joshua McClary, who leads the conference with 57 steals and is averaging 17.1 points per game, was the Defensive Player of the Year.

Randolph-Macon’s Josh Merkel was named the Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his 10th year guiding the Yellow Jackets. His team is seeded first in the conference tournament and ranked fifth nationally by d3hoops.com.

Washington and Lee forward Connor Amorosi was the Rookie of the Year, also earning third-team honors. He’s averaging 15.8 ppg.

Two Captains capture conference honors



Christopher Newport third baseman Brooke Greaver and left-hander Jamie Martin gained weekly awards from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference.

Greaver, the Player of the Week, hit two home runs and drove in six runs in the Captains’ season-opening doubleheader sweep at Ferrum on Sunday. Martin, a fellow senior, was the Pitcher of the Week after throwing five scoreless innings at Ferrum. She struck out nine and yielded two hits.

CNU’s Weis, Monroe take weekly awards



Christopher Newport senior Raine Weis and junior Ryan Monroe were named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference women’s and men’s Players of the Week, respectively, for their play over the weekend.

Weis won twice at No. 1 in singles and twice at No. 1 doubles with Kylie Schaefer in victories by the No. 17 Captains against Methodist and No. 37 Averett.

Monroe won three-set matches on singles line 2 in a team victory by the No. 29 Captains over No. 15 Sewanee and a loss to No. 27 Washington and Lee last weekend in Lexington. He is 10-0 in singles this season.

Wideout from D.C. commits to ODU



Old Dominion gained a commitment from Ryan Thomas, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior wide receiver from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. He had six catches for 91 yards in three games last season.
