Teri Garr, the comedy actress known for films such as Young Frankenstein and Tootsie, has died. She was 79 years old.

According to her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, Garr died on Tuesday of multiple sclerosis, and she was "surrounded by family and friends." Garr had also battled other health problems in recent years.

Her entertainment career began as a background dancer in multiple Elvis Presley movies; then, she earned an Academy Award nomination for her role as Sandy Lester in the 1982 comedy Tootsie.

She also had a memorable guest stint on Friends, portraying the mother of Lisa Kudrow. Garr's last credited role was in the 2011 TV series How to Marry a Billionaire.
