With gorgeous views atop 183 steps, Birch Knob Observation Tower in Wise is a must-see Virginia attraction.

Birch Knob is an observation deck tower at the top of 183 steps leading up and over the Jefferson National Forest. On a good, clear day, you can see up to six states: Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and even Ohio if the conditions are just right.

Built in 2003, it is maintained by the United States Forest Service and stands at an elevation of over 3,100 feet above sea level at its highest point. People come from all around to take in the incomparable views.

...whereas a foggy morning could be equally as interesting.

People of all ages make the trip to see the sights from the top of the tower. There are several landings where you can stop and rest if you need to take a breather. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can continue on and hike to nearby Jenny Falls.
