The winter holidays are just weeks away, and it’s time to get into the holiday spirit! Last year, the pandemic put the kibosh on many of the traditions, displays, and events around the city; this year, however, is a different story. Declining cases and increased vaccination rates are making it possible for the monuments and buildings to reopen. And D.C. is excited to welcome locals and visitors to experience these holiday events once again!

Below is a list of events and displays the whole family can enjoy this holiday season:

Sculpture Garden Ice Rink

The ice rink at the National Art Gallery is one of the most amazing places to ice skate in the country. Situated in the gallery’s Sculpture Garden, skaters can enjoy the crisp winter weather with a backdrop of famous works of art. The ice rink is open from November 19 through March 6, 2022. Skating fees are $10 for adults and $9 for adults over 60 and children under 12. Lessons and ice skate rentals are also available. After your skate, head over to the Pavilion Cafe for hot drinks, soup, sandwiches, and more.

Washington National Cathedral Christmas Concerts

Every year, the Washington National Cathedral hosts a schedule of live holiday concerts for advent and Christmas. Last year's concerts were completely virtual, but this year, the cathedral will host both live and streamed events for everyone to enjoy. A full schedule of events will be available sometime in November. Visit cathedral.org to purchase tickets.

Covid forced the cancellation of live theater across the country, including the annual performances of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol at the famed Ford’s Theatre. In 2020, the theater carried on the tradition by holding a live radio broadcast. For 2021, live performances will be held from November 24 to December 27. All guests will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative covid test for entry and wear a face mask. Tickets start at $36 and are available online.

Enchant Christmas DC

Enchant Christmas is returning to Nationals Park on November 26. This special holiday experience includes a 90,000-square-foot Christmas light maze, ice skating trail, kids zone, holiday market, and Santa’s workshop. You can spend time with the little ones in the kid zone, work up a sweat on the ice skating trail, and then head to the market for hot beverages and sweet treats. Tickets start at $29 and can be purchased online ahead of your visit.

Christkindlmarkt at Heinrich House Museum

This German-style market is one of the most popular events during the holidays in D.C. The market is only open for three days each year and gives visitors a chance to find unique, artisan-created holiday gifts. The outdoor event will also feature tastings of Chr. Heurich Brewing Co.’s famous “Senate Beer”. The 2021 Christkindlmarkt Market will be held December 3-5 in the Castle Garden at the Heinrich House Museum. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $16 for admission plus one adult beverage. Prices will be higher at the door, so get them online now.
