For Lord of the Rings fans, March 25 is no ordinary day. It's national Tolkien Reading Day. And to celebrate, we've compiled 11 of J.R.R. Tolkien's most inspiring quotes.
For 15 years, Tolkien fans have celebrated Tolkien Reading Day on March 25 in honor of the famed author and his works, more notably The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit.
Why March 25? I'm glad you asked. According to the Tolkien Society, March 25 commemorates the day that Sauron was defeated once and for all. Duh.
And to honor Tolkien and his brilliant works, we've compiled our 11 favorite quotes from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books. So, grab your lembas (Elvish bread) and let's go on an adventure to Middle-earth!
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." -- Thorin in The Hobbit
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost." -- Bilbo in The Fellowship of the Ring
"There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after." -- Thorin in The Hobbit
"It's dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door," he used to say. "You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no telling where you might be swept off to." -- Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring
"A day may come when the courage of men fails. When we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day." -- Aragorn in The Return of the King
"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater." -- Haldir in The Fellowship of the Ring
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." -- Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring
"Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens." -- Gimli in The Fellowship of the Ring
"Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised." -- Aragorn in The Return of the King
"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." -- Faramir in The Two Towers
"It is useless to meet revenge with revenge: it will heal nothing." -- Frodo in The Return of the King
