Don't miss the Castle Rock Ducky Derby on June 9!

Of all of the things you'd expect to do on a Saturday afternoon, cheering on a bunch of rubber duckies floating down a river probably isn't at the top of your list. But checking out the annual Ducky Derby -- hosted by the Rotary Club of Castle Rock, Castle Rock High Noon Rotary, and Rotary Club of Castle Pines -- is definitely a must. The event will be held on June 9 and will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the actual duck race kicks off at 3 p.m. sharp. [gallery type="rectangular" size="large" ids="37237,37230"]

Here's how it works:

You donate to the Rotary Club. They use that money to help important local causes, such as the Women's Crisis and Family Outreach CenterDouglas Elbert Task Force Food Bank, Castle Rock Senior Center, Guitars for the Troops, Wellspring, and Boy Scouts of America. Proceeds also go towards other programs that focus on youth leadership training, college scholarships, international exchange students, and helping Colorado flood and fire victims. One ticket costs $5 and you can get five of 'em for $20. Each ticket has a number written on it that corresponds to a number printed on the bottom of a rubber ducky. When the race kicks off, organizers will dump all of the rubber duckies into Plum Creek and let them race to the finish line. Whoever has the ticket for the winning duck will get $2,000! Second and third place finishers receive $750 and $250, respectively. Technically, there is no purchase necessary in order to win, though the $5 donation is strongly encouraged. However, you can receive one free Ducky Derby ticket per person by filling out a written request on a 3 x 5 notecard with your name, address, email and phone number and mailing it to Ducky Derby Committee, P.O. Box 1045, Castle Rock, CO 80104. If the card is received at that address by May 25, 2018, you'll have a free Ducky Derby ticket waiting for you on the day of the race. This isn't anything to laugh about. There will be thousands of rubber duckies dumped into the creek for the race. One lucky person will walk away with $2,000. Technically, the winner also has a chance to win $1 million, though the odds are slim. Before the race, organizers put one of the ducky's numbers into a sealed envelope. If the number in the envelope matches the number on the bottom of the winning rubber ducky, then that person wins a million dollars (payable through 40 yearly installments of $25,000).
[gallery type="rectangular" size="large" ids="37238,37239"] Aside from the Ducky Derby itself, the event will also feature a street festival at the (conveniently named) Festival Park, near Second and Wilcox streets. The festival will feature tons of events for children, including a ducky coloring contest, face painting, and a bouncy castle. For the adults, there will be food and beverages, live music, and a silent auction. A number of local artisans and vendors will also be selling their wares. The event is always a hit and it is pretty much the only chance to cheer on a rubber ducky race without looking like a weirdo. What do you think? Will we see you there?
