Federal workers: If you’re struggling, these Hampton Roads locations want to help!

More and more local businesses in Hampton Roads are stepping up and offering free services to federal workers in light of the government shutdown. If you’re one of the thousands of furloughed employees, the following places in Hampton Roads want to help — Use this list to find out where to go and get the free financial assistance and services (or even just a special treat) you need!

Green Leaf & Pebble Tea Spa

Get away from the stress, and have a relaxing time at the Green Leaf & Pebble Tea Spa. They are offering a free 60-minute massage or signature facial through Jan 31. 

Salvation Army 

The Salvation Army wants to provide financial assistance by paying for the electric and gas bills for both the Coast Guard and federal workers in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake (excluding zip codes 23321 and 23323). In order to receive the services, you need to provide a Photo ID, a copy of your $0 pay stub, account numbers, and the most recent bills for the account. Pet Food Pantry

The Pet Food Pantry is working together with locals and organizations to collect donations to give to furloughed workers who need the assistance. They are giving away more than 1,000 lbs. of dog food and have partnered with AT&T in order to be able to provide the donations. Contact them on their website

VB Sheriff's Office 

411 Integrity Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office want to give back to the furloughed employees and their families with a free meal. Just present your federal ID and get a meal on them! They will be giving away the meals on Jan 28 & 30 and Feb 1 from 5-7 p.m.

Naro Expanded Video

Take the night off and relax with a great movie, some popcorn, and your family. The Naro Expanded Theatre wants to help out by offering free general stock rentals -- does not include new releases.

Vintage Barber Company

1813 Greenbrier Pkwy, Ste. D, Chesapeake, Virginia

The local Chesapeake barber shop wants to help out Coast Guard members by providing free haircuts for those who show their valid ID. Appointments recommended. Contact them here.

PETA

The organization is offering free spay and neuter services and free rabies vaccinations at any one of their mobile vet clinics. In order to receive the services, you can call them at (757)-622-7382 or sign up online, here

City of Chesapeake

They would like to assist furloughed workers by offering payment extensions or arrangements for water and sewer bills. To inquire about receiving help, check out their website

City of Suffolk

The City of Suffolk is providing crisis assistance for families without heat, cut-off utilities, or inoperable or unsafe equipment -- they are also providing intake services, tax determents, & payment extensions. To learn more, visit their website

City of Norfolk

The city is offering financial assistance by offering payment plans for HRUBS, personal property tax, and real estate taxes. The city also plans to deter monthly parkers and waive the late fees on parking tickets that were issued within the last 30 days. In order to receive the services, you must be a resident of Norfolk and show proof of employment. To see more, check out their website.

City of Portsmouth

The city is providing assistance with utility and rental payments, food referrals, and the City Treasurer's Office is offering tax deferments. Find out about all the assistance available in Portsmouth here.
