Amazon is building an 855,000-square-foot distribution center outside of Baltimore, which will create 1,500 new jobs and spur the economy. Thanks to incentive packages offered by state and local lawmakers, Amazon is building a large new distribution center at Sparrows Point along the Chesapeake. Maryland is already home to three Amazon facilities. The new distribution center will be a state-of-the-art facility which is expected to open sometime during 2019. Its main function will be the picking, packing and shipping of books, electronics and other types of merchandise. The company is also shopping around in the area for a new headquarters location.
Both the construction of the facility and day-to-day operations will bring jobs and revenue to the local area and state. Construction alone will cost millions of dollars, but it will provide as many as 3,000 temporary jobs. And when the facility finally opens, 1,500 permanent positions will need to be filled. The company’s three other Maryland facilities have dumped $100 million into the state’s economy in a two-year span. Amazon also is utilizing solar panels, which not only is eco-friendly, but also helps to cut down on energy consumption and costs by 30 percent. And, since opening facilities in the state, the company has donated over $150,000 to local charities. The State and Baltimore’s County Council were able to lure the internet giant by offering a $2.2 million incentive package that included a $200,000 loan provided by the Council, while the Department of Commerce has given the company a $2 million loan. The loans, however, are conditional, meaning that they don’t need to be repaid if the conditions of the loan are met. Amazon will also benefit from various local and state tax credits such as the State’s Job Creation Tax Credit. The new facility will open on 1700 Sparrows Point Road at Tradepoint Atlantic.
