It's not the World Series or the Super Bowl. It's James Comey's testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

On Thursday, June 8, James Comey, previous director of the FBI, testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Nearly exactly a month after he was fired by President Donald Trump, Comey testified that he orchestrated the leak of accounts of conversations with President Donald Trump. Comey said he thought it might lead to the appointment of a special prosecutor to lead the Russia investigation. What the leaks definitely led to was increased business for D.C. bars, as they opened early to host boozy viewing parties. Shaw's Tavern on Florida Ave. NW hosted what they called "The Comey Hearing Covfefe." The viewing party was hosted between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Covfefe is, of course, a reference to the cryptic typo tweeted by President Trump. The supposed meaning of the word "Covfefe" has inspired many internet memes, and now it seems it has inspired the patrons at Shaw's Tavern. Another bar, aptly named The Partisan, also hosted a viewing party. Their Facebook page said they would open at 10 a.m. The bar said: "snag a seat at the bar to watch it all go down. We’ll be opening early at 10 a.m. with our TVs tuned into the hearing and sound on full blast. Of course, libations will be involved. We’re offering The Last Word and Drop The Bomb cocktails at $6 each." Such clever cocktails for such a serious occasion.
Duffy's Irish Pub hosted an event, also serving Covfefe-inspired cocktails: Union Pub and Capitol Lounge were also among the bars that opened early for viewing parties. What do you think of these viewing parties? Is it an appropriate way to respond to a Senate Hearing on Russian interference? Let us know in the comments below.
