As we ruminate on tales of persistence, failure, and success shared with us at Denver StartUp Week, we can't help but ask ourselves where the Mile High City ranks when it comes to startups. So we did a quick search, and as you may have guessed, Denver is a fantastic place to start a business. So good, in fact, we're actually ranked above San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland.
It's all based on the
Kaufman Index which monitors and ranks business activity based on data obtained from the IRS, the Census Bureau, and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Factors include the rate of entrepreneurs, the opportunity share of new entrepreneurs, and finally the startup density.
Not to mention, Denver has long been a business magnet for its "lifestyle factor."
“[Denver] has a great vibe to it. It's an aspirational place. People want to come to Colorado, and we want to export the feel and flavors of what we do here every day,” said Al Laws of Laws Whiskey House.

As for the ranking, the Mile High City comes in as the 10th best city in the country for startups following Miami, Austin, LA, San Diego, New York, Phoenix, and Houston.
The report also estimates that nearly one in every 10 businesses in Denver is a startup.
