From Rucksacks to Backpacks
Alright, so you've completed your enlistment and are now heading off to college. If you're a bit nervous about starting this new chapter of your life -- especially surrounded by 18-22-year-olds who haven't worn a uniform or don't even know how to break down a rifle -- you should know that the military has prepared you for college, in more ways than one ...
Living Quarters
Then:
Now:
Questionable arrangements, yes, but in college, you likely only have one roommate.
Early-Morning Classes
Then:
Now:
Hopefully next semester you'll avoid classes before 10 a.m., just sayin'.
Mealtimes
Then:
Now:
Here's hoping your college's cafeteria has better food than your old chow hall or anything you've ever opened in an M.R.E.
Finals Week All-Nighters
Then:
Now:
If you're familiar with missions at Zero Dark Thirty, you're all set for late-night cram sessions.
Authority Figures
Then:
Now:
These two have more in common than you think.
Fraternities & Sororities
Then:
Now:
Think of this as having brothers or sisters in arms whose aim is best kept on the beer pong table. Oh, and all that hazing you had as an E-1 should prepare you for pledging.
Law Enforcement
Then:
Now:
Since you're of legal drinking age by now, don't be the one who buys the minors booze. Overzealous Campus Police will make you wish you were facing the MPs.
Tuition Payments
Student loans, what are those? THANKS, G.I. BILL!
Don't be surprised if the young civilians in your class look to you for advice or if your professor expects a lot from you because you're older and had a military career before matriculating. You have life and leadership skills that your peers don't, so consider yourself a role model. On behalf of everyone at Our Community Now, we'd like to thank you for your service and wish you all the best in this new chapter of your life.
