President Donald Trump has named Justice Department Aid and Silver Spring resident Robert Kyoung Hur as Maryland’s next U.S. Attorney.
Robert Kyoung Hur has been named Maryland’s next U.S. Attorney
by President Donald Trump. Prior to being nominated by the President, Hur held the second most powerful post of the Justice Department as an assistant to the now former Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein. The forty-four-year-old is preparing to lead an office of 80 attorneys and 80 more staff members in efforts to fight corruption and gang violence in Baltimore, as well as other major cases throughout the state.
U.S. Attorneys are appointed by the President and must be confirmed by the Senate. The Maryland U.S. Attorney's office has a reputation of being one of the busiest offices nationwide. The office has dealt with high-profile cases like Prince Georges County Executive Jack Johnson's famous bribery scandal, illegal business dealings among prison guards and gang members, and the recent allegations of county legislators being accused of accepting bribes to expand liquor sales.
Hur has a law degree from Stanford and a bachelor’s degree in literature from Harvard. His resume is quite impressive, and includes being a partner at the King and Spalding law firm in D.C., working with the current director of the FBI Christopher Wray as his special assistant, dealing with regulatory and financial offenses, counterterrorism, appellate issues and corporate fraud.
Of the many cases that Hur has tried, he famously had a case against the notorious MS-13 El Salvadorian Gang and was part of an effort to crack down on the gang’s activities within the state.
While Maryland’s U.S. Senators did not endorse Hur, both Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen have been publicly supportive of his appointment. As Hur awaits confirmation from the U.S. Senate, the overall sentiment seems to be in his favor as both Democratic Maryland Senators have said that they are impressed with his record and look forward to working with him in the future.
Once confirmed, Hurr will replace Rod Rosenstein as Maryland’s federal prosecutor.
