Soon baseball fans will be able to buy league jerseys and more made by Under Armour, while the Major Leagues will be sporting the gear starting in 2019.

Major League Baseball announced in December that Baltimore based company Under Armour will become the supplier of the league’s official uniforms in 2020. However, on May 18, MLB announced that Under Armour will take over as supplier in 2019 instead. The December agreement granted Fanatics Inc. licensing rights to make and sell official MLB merchandise, since the company has signed a deal to purchase VF Corp.’s Licensed Sports Group, as well as Majestic Athletic’s plant in Easton, Pennsylvania, where fan merchandise and team jerseys are currently being manufactured. Major League Baseball’s Commissioner Rob Manfred has revealed that Under Armour-produced fan merchandise is currently in the works and will be available next year. Also, next year Under Armour’s gear will be used as dugout clothing during the postseason. The switch to on-field apparel produced by Under Armour will complete the transition and begin at the start of the 2019 baseball season. Majestic Inc. has been the manufacturer of MLB practice jerseys since 1982 and the supplier of team game uniforms since 2005. Prior to 2005, both Russell Athletic and Majestic manufactured MLB’s team uniforms.
Under Armour is the company started in 1996 by former University of Maryland fullback Kevin Plank, who began his business in a Washington D.C. basement. When Plank played fullback on the University of Maryland’s team, he got annoyed of constantly having to change in and out of his sweat soaked t-shirts worn under his jerseys and noticed that the team’s compression shorts always stayed dry. His observation gave him the inspiration to create a t-shirt made from synthetic fabric. Once Plank graduated from school, he made the first prototype and gave it to his friends and former teammates, who were then playing in the NFL. Before long, Adidas, Reebok and Nike began making similar products that were moisture-wicking, and soon after, the brand would start to gain and draw people’s attention before becoming nationally known and recognized. The company is now one of the biggest international manufacturers of athletic shoes, jackets, t-shirts, hoodies, leggings, pants, shorts and accessories like protective gear, caps, gloves, and bags.
