The Prince George's County Fair will be at the Show Place area during the weekend of September 7. Here's your complete guide for the family-friendly event!
The Prince George's County Fair first began in 1842 and has been a favorite event of locals ever since. Originally, the county’s annual fair was a gathering for farmers to show and sell their livestock and produce. But, as time went on, competitions featuring homemade goods such as jam, jellies, clothes and quilts became a part of the festivities. These traditions remain today, with the addition of other events such as flower arranging, photography and fine arts over the years. Now, in the contemporary era of the fair and community, expect to see carnival rides and games, live musical entertainment and more.
The Prince George's County Fair begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 7. The fair is open on Thursday and Friday from 5 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the fair opens at 11 a.m. and is open until 6 p.m. For more info call 301-442-7393 or visit the fair website
Entrance to the fair is just $6 for folks between the ages of 13 and 55. Kids 13 and under and seniors over 55 are $5. The rides cost between three to five tickets, with each ticket costing $1.50. There are ticket books available -- books of 30 are $25, 50 are $55 -- and all day wristbands are also available for $10 on Thursday, $25 on Friday, $30 on Saturday and $25 on Sunday.
There are a few days of the festival dedicated to seniors and the military. On Thursday, seniors (ages 55+) get in for free. And on Sunday, military personnel, their spouses and immediate family are admitted for free.
There are more than a few carnival rides and activities scattered across the fields, including harness racing, NASCAR simulator car races, class crafts sessions, arts and crafts, and livestock competitions. Live animals are also on display, giving children the chance to pet and experience a variety of furry creatures that they may not encounter in their everyday lives.
This year’s fair will also feature a beautiful baby contest in which toddlers and babies are pampered and primped to perfection. The beautiful baby contest takes place on Sunday, September 10 inside of the Show Place arena at 2 p.m. Only residents of Prince Georges County are permitted to participate and entry is free. The contest will consist of three groups divided by age:
- Group One - infants between six and 12 months old
- Group Two - toddlers between 13 and 24 months old
- Group Three - toddlers between 25 and 36 months old
If you wish to enter your child into the baby contest, no pre-registration is required. The registration form can be found online.
Entry forms for the livestock and arts competitions can be found here.
The animals in the livestock competition include sheep, swine, dairy goats, meat goats, beef cattle and dairy cattle. For the art competitions, there will be events focused on home arts, fine arts, photography, flowers and agriculture. Those interested in entering the contests should keep in mind that entries must be submitted on between noon and 7 p.m. on September 5.
Fairgoers can expect to see local bands performing at the midway, as well as business showcases handing out samples and freebies, exhibitors and lots of vendors selling everything from cotton candy and funnel cakes to homemade crafts and goods.
