Have a taste for the Southern life in mini form? Grab your hats and place your bets (for a good cause!).Where can you see tiny horses, big hats, and Southern charm in Colorado? Well nowhere else but the Denver Mini Derby! The Mini Derby has made a name for itself as the premier Kentucky Derby viewing party in Colorado that has a few twists of its own. So, obviously, there will be a viewing of the "real" Derby, which is fine I guess. Hosted at the Stanley Marketplace in Aurora, there will be a massive screen showing the Kentucky Derby for all you true fans out there. While you enjoy the open bar, before and after the "real" Derby, tons of events will be held that you seriously shouldn't miss.
First of all, there will be a best-dressed contest, for those of you who take your hat and pastel game VERY seriously. There will also be other contests including Best Hat and Cutest Couple (so get out that seersucker, gents!). [gallery type="rectangular" ids="35763,35762,35761,35759,35760,35758"] Another great addition to the event is the historic "Cutest Mini 'Race' Ever Held." Why are their quotations around Race? Well, it's not too much of a race -- no one will be riding the mini horses (for their safety more than the humans, duh), but they will be led by jockeys for added comedic effect. BUT I will be honest, the event that I am looking forward to the MOST (and so should you) would have to be the Corgi Race and Costume Contest. That's right, the internet's favorite canine will be featured at the Mini Derby. And they will be dressed in costumes. Check out the full schedule of the day's events: 1:00 p.m. -- Doors open 2:30 p.m. -- Corgi Race and Costume Contest 3:00 p.m. -- Best Hat/Dressed/Cutest Couple Awards 3:50 p.m. -- Charitable Betting Ends 4:00 p.m. -- MST - Kentucky Derby is LIVE 5:00 p.m. -- The Cutest Mini "Race" ever held (Additional Charitable Betting) 6:00 p.m. -- Event Ends The betting that goes on at the Mini Derby is not the same as the "real" derby. All bets go toward some great causes like Minds Matter, Cherry Arts, Kids' Compassion Project, and Equine 808 Horse Rescue. The Denver Mini Derby does have an important message to impart though in regards to horse racing as well:
"Horse racing is undoubtedly cruel, the Mini Derby does not promote or endorse horse racing but rather an enjoyable day out with friends in fancy attire. The Kentucky Derby could stop completely and we would still throw a big party with bigger hats and our four-legged friends. In fact, we would be glad if it did."The great Mini Derby will be held on May 5, during the Derby from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Will you be attending the Denver Mini Derby? Did you attend last year?
