Ring in the holiday season with a trip to George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. "Christmas Illuminations" combines the old with the new, in an event you will always remember.

Even if you've been there before, there is nothing like seeing Mount Vernon at Christmas. Shop for gifts at the 18th-century winter market, learn a bit of history at the living reenactments, and marvel at the lights and fireworks over the Potomac River.

If they are still available, you can add a timed mansion tour to your general admission tickets. Get an up-close view of how George and Martha Washington lived and see the estate all decked out as it may have been centuries ago. Be sure to visit Alladin the camel in his pen!

While this is a family-friendly event, the activities are primarily outdoors. You will need to plan for the weather and be sure to bundle up. Seating for the fireworks will be on the expansive lawn and you can bring picnic blankets and portable camp chairs.
