The Oscars are all about awards, glittler, and glamour. And there’s no reason why you can’t get in on it all from the comfort of your own home. Throw a viewing party for all your friends, and create your own Oscar action.

The Oscars are the perfect time for a party. Here are four fun and creative tips for making your Oscar viewing party a total hit.

Glitter it up.

The Oscars are all about glitter -- from the dresses to the awards to the décor. So, make sure you incorporate some in your shindig. Start with your décor. You can actually DIY a lot, and not only save money, but create pieces that are one-of-a-kind. Isn’t it more fun to drink champagne out of a glittery gold flute? Pick up some gold (or silver if you prefer) glitter at a local crafts store and then some plastic champagne flutes or wine tumblers at the dollar store. With a little bit of glue and some foam brushes, you can create the shiniest creations. Check out this site for an easy to follow, step-by-step guide. Offer mini prizes.

Create an air of competition by making your guests write down who they think will win and have prizes at the ready. Go with an awards theme and hand out mini Oscars and champagne bottles. Think of your audience here. If your group is full of your closest girlfriends, they might love new beauty finds. If the party is mostly couples, maybe the prizes can be coupons to restaurants and other experiences in the city. Step up your appetizer game.

Rather than serving a full meal, keep it easy and lighthearted with tons of appetizers. No one wants to sit down to a meal and then stare at a television. Bites make the whole environment more casual. These appetizers (recommended for the Super Bowl) are great places to start for ideas. Go for something that you can put on a toothpick or that you can eat with your hands. And if you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated to serve -- something to match your glittered champagne flutes -- assort a cheese and charcuturie board. You can learn how to make the perfect board here. Other apps to consider are anything wrapped in prosciutto, like asparagus or pears, crostini, or something stuffed, such as peppers and mushrooms. And don’t forget the cocktails! These four are super-delicious and simple to make for any party. Dress up.

Just because you’re not actually at the Oscars doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still have the opportunity to look your best. Make the party a little more interesting by asking your guests to dress formally. Of course, not everyone can go get a designer gown on short notice, so let them know that creativity is welcome. Vintage and consignment shops are great places to find unique pieces without spending a fortune. For your fashionista friends, ask them to get inspiration from Oscar fashion moments past. To make things even more fun, roll out a little red carpet and if you’ve got a photographer friend, have them take photos of each person as they walk into your home. This is not only a super-fun way to get everyone immediately into the mood of your party, but also makes a great memento for your guests to take home. • Make sure the television is working. Also, know when the Oscars start and on what channel, so you can have people start to arrive before. It’s a good idea to start the party during the red carpet fashion coverage.
  • Take stock of your current décor and make sure everything is arranged in the most comfortable way for your guests. Burn a couple candles so people can be welcomed and feel cozy in your home. Also, it’s important to have enough seating for everyone you invite.
  • Keep in mind the dynamics between people. Make sure everyone is introduced.
  • And if you’re looking for more ways to throw a great party, check out this guide.
