Held at the beginning of May, this annual flower festival celebrates spring at one of the country's most prized historic landmarks.
Flower Mart at Washington National Cathedral is a local tradition for the ages. All Hallows Guild has organized the event since 1939 with the intent of supporting the cathedral's beautiful grounds and gardens. With over 20,000 visitors in attendance each year, the two-day festival is indispensable to the D.C. spring season.
Here are some of the activities you can enjoy at Flower Mart 2019:
Get a start on your spring garden and shop the variety of flowers on sale at the Flower District. Need advice on what to grow? The cathedral's horticultural staff will be there to help with any of your gardening needs. In addition to flowers, there will also be herbs, bonsais, orchids, flower arrangements, and more.
Peruse over 70 merchandise vendors to find the perfect gift or a cool souvenir to take home. The White Elephant tent, in particular, is sure to have something fun and unexpected.
Grab a bite to eat from the many food booths, offering everything from barbecue to lobster rolls. Have a sweet tooth? The Episcopal Church Women will have their signature spread of delicious baked goods to choose from.
Ride a piece of history with their antique carousel! Purchased in 1963 by the All Hallows Guild, this carousel is one of the last-known made by the U.S. Merry-Go-Round Corporation. This particular carousel is believed to have been from the 1890s and receives continued maintenance for everyone's enjoyment.
Participate in the Cathedral Tower Climb! With over 300 steps to climb, this guided tour will allow you to experience the great heights of the National Cathedral. Online tickets cost $20, which you can buy here. Tickets will be available the day of the tour for $25, but they are limited, so we recommend getting them early!
Kids can enjoy the children's activities area, games, and a special puppet show by the cathedral's Master Puppeteers.
View the International Floral Display provided by various Washington, D.C., embassies. This year, Thailand, Japan, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Panama, and Luxembourg will present their country's beautiful blooms in stunning visual displays. Admission is free and cameras are welcome!
Don't forget the Opening Ceremony! As Flower Mart's honorary chairperson, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will cut the ribbon to officially start the festival on Friday, May 3, at 10 a.m.
In addition to all of the above, there will be dance groups, choral groups, live singers, and others providing free entertainment during both days of the event. Performing arts group Washington Revels will close out the festival.
Flower Mart will take place Friday, May 3, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, May 4, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Washington National Cathedral. You can find more information here.
