At the Maryland Zoo's African Journey Celebration, June 22-23, you can be the first to see the animals' expanded homes.
Last March, the Maryland Zoo announced some major renovations for the African Journey exhibit, with the expansion of the elephant habitat being a top priority. Now the wait is over, and visitors can see the finished product for themselves!
This weekend, come see the newly designed quarters for the elephants, lions, and giraffes located in the zoo's African Journey area. Explore the expanded structures and get close-up access to the animals.
Some of the habitats have doubled or even tripled in size, and include impressive new features like the Savanna Overlook Boardwalk. Visitors are in for a big treat! You can find more about the renovations here.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can take advantage of extra activities planned for the occasion, too. Meet the hard-working zookeepers taking care of these animals and see the work they do at the zoo. Take the kids to a lively puppet show at the zoo's Oasis Stage. Informative stations will be set up all over the zoo, so take a moment to learn something new! View the itinerary here.
The African Journey Celebration will take place Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. during regular zoo hours. This event is covered by regular zoo admission. In the meantime, catch a sneak preview of the new habitats!
