Dress, eat, and drink mint juleps like you’re at the 145th in Louisville – without ever leaving Virginia!

Better yet, this Derby party is for a GREAT cause! Seton Youth Shelters is celebrating their 20th year of the annual Kentucky Derby Day Celebration: A Silks & Irons Soiree, a much-anticipated annual spring event that's held at the gorgeous Back Bay Farms, in Virginia Beach, on Saturday, May 4, from 5 to 10 p.m.

Dressed in your Derby attire – lavish hats, seersucker, and bowties – enjoy a leisurely drive into the country to Back Bay Farms, a beautiful 80-acre horse farm surrounded by white fencing. This farm plays an important role in Hampton Roads by supporting local philanthropy – such as the Seton Youth Shelter’s annual Kentucky Derby Celebration.

Once you arrive at this special farm, you will enjoy an evening of delicious food by the Baker's Crust Artisan Kitchen (oh, they are so yummy), desserts made by the shelter’s staff and residents (they put their hearts into it), live music, and dancing. Also, to make this an even more authentic Derby event, there will be a specialty mint julep bar, cocktail bars, and a LIVE broadcast of the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby on a giant screen.

There will be a hat contest, silent auction, live turf horse races, equestrian exhibitions, EQ-WINE Ring Toss, and so much more. I have no idea how all of this fun and entertainment is packed into one evening; however, it is – and has been done successfully for the last 20 years.

About the Organization

Now, does this sound like a great time or what? This elegant evening of hats and bow ties, mint juleps, and dancing is just one of the annual events that helps support the Seton Youth Shelters, a nonprofit whose mission is to offer a free safe haven, 24 hours a day for adolescents in crisis throughout the Hampton Roads area. I love supporting these events; just watching the nurturing and loving staff interact with the children residing in the shelters is overwhelming and infectious.

Even if you can't attend the Derby event, you can visit #WishlistWednesday to see what kinds of items the shelters need, like paper towels, zip lock bags, ketchup, and other everyday items (Please note: Donations are not accepted at the shelters. Please drop off all donations Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., at their Administrative Office). Or you can order supplies off of their Amazon registry.

“… Know that we are here 24/7, 365 days a year," Seton Youth Shelters says on their website. "You can call our helpline any time of day or night. You, Hampton Roads, keep the doors to our girls' and boys' shelters open. If you can donate your time and support, join us in 'Changing Lives, Building Futures.' Take a little time today, this week, this month, or even year, to join us in making a difference.”

Seton's helpline is available at 757-498-HELP.
