Ski by the light of the moon!
This Saturday, February 8, a near-full moon will provide an opportunity that few have ever experienced. National Park Service (NPS) rangers and the Gunnison Nordic Club have partnered to offer a moonlight ski at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The weather is predicted to be mostly clear in the afternoon with some clouds moving in through the evening, so you should be able to see!
The canyon is known for some amazing sights, hikes, and camping opportunities in the summer, but you can enjoy it in the winter, as well. The NPS keeps a groomed South Rim trail during the snow season (for both nordic skiing and snowshoeing), and it invites you to ski it on one fun night.
The event is free to all, and classic and skate skiers are invited to explore the South Rim and learn more about the park.
"From 5 pm until 8:30 pm the South Rim visitor center will host an evening of skiing and camaraderie. Bring your Nordic ski gear, classic or skate, and enjoy a ski under the full moon. Stop by the visitor center to chat with rangers, meet fellow skiers, and enjoy a few light refreshments," says the National Park Service.
Parking at the visitor center is limited, so carpooling is highly encouraged. The trail starts right at the visitor center, so you can get your ski on right out of the car.
The weather is predicted to be mostly clear in the afternoon with some clouds moving in through the evening, so you should be able to see some beautiful sights. The Black Canyon is a designated International Dark Sky Park, so if the clouds don't gather, you should have some amazing star gazing opportunities. In addition, it's going to be chilly, so be sure to dress appropriately to keep yourself warm and safe, and don't forget to bring a headlamp or some type of light source to ensure you can see your way.
