Bucket list alert! The 2019 Maryland Lighthouse Challenge will take you on a curated tour of some of the state's most beautiful landmarks, its lighthouses. See them all and win a prize!

Visiting historic lighthouses is one of my favorite things to do. Not only can you learn about the site, you can often climb to the top and get amazing views of the surrounding landscape. This year, the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society has put together an unforgettable tour, presented as a competition, complete with a prize at the end.

The tour is meant to be taken by car, so get a team together and get planning! Even if you don't finish the full circuit, each lighthouse will have a free commemorative token for you. Score! Many of the lighthouses are free to visit, but some do charge a nominal fee. You can complete the circuit in any order, but you must complete the full tour in order to receive a special souvenir at the end.

If you'd like to get a jump on the competition, you can invoke the Early Bird Special and visit three of the lighthouses on Friday, September 20: Sandy Point Lighthouse, Choptank River Lighthouse Replica, and Hooper Strait Lighthouse. You'll have to give up either Saturday or Sunday, though, so choose wisely if you go this route!
