This July, you can experience a wonderful international tradition right here in Colorado. The Water Lantern Festival will return to Thornton and Colorado Springs, bringing with it memories, hope, laughter, and a stunning visual display that will stay with you for years to come.

Inspired by Thailand's Loi Krathong festival celebrated every year in November, this festival is the American version. The celebration includes releasing floating paper lanterns at nightfall, all carrying your hopes, dreams, and words for loved ones.

Thousands of lanterns are expected to be released during this year's event, and the twinkling LED lights across the water is a magical scene that is wondrous for all ages.

"Water Lantern Festival is an incredible experience where thousands of family, friends, and strangers celebrate life together. Water Lantern Festival brings together individuals from all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life to join in one emotional and memorable night. You'll cherish these moments as you witness the beauty of thousands of lanterns reflecting upon the water," says

A ticket to the event gets you a floating lantern, commemorative drawstring bag, marker, and wristband, as well as access to food trucks and music. You can write whatever you wish on the lantern, though it is customary to decorate your lantern with your hopes, dreams, or even words to loved ones.

After every ceremony, the staff will ensure that all lanterns are cleaned up and out of the water.

"Our team cleans up all the lanterns following the event. In addition, we also pick up any existing trash that may have previously been in or around the water. Lastly, the lanterns are made from rice paper and wood so they are eco-friendly," says the organization.
