Hop, jump and sprint your way through an 8K or one-mile Family Fun Run on the grounds of the Maryland Zoo!
Fall is here, which means marathon season is back in full swing. Get moving at the Maryland Zoo's Zoo Zoom!
On Sunday, November 17, runners of all ages can race through the Maryland Zoo in either an 8K or one-mile Family Fun Run. To make it even more fun, shake it up with an animal costume—that giraffe onesie hanging in your closet can be put to use besides on Halloween! Runners will experience the sights and sounds of the zoo, including the newly-designed African Safari exhibit. After you reach the finish line, cool off with some refreshments and enjoy complimentary admission into the zoo!
Awards will be handed out to the top three runners of each category and age range, as well as prizes for the best costumes. Event proceeds will benefit the Maryland Zoo's operations—including scheduling more events like these in the future. Win-win!

There are three ways to participate in this run. There's the 8K run, which is $50 and includes a souvenir hoodie, zoo admission, chip timing, and post-run refreshments. The one-mile Family Fun Run is a great option for, you guessed it, families! For $35, folks will receive post-run refreshments, zoo admission, and a souvenir hoodie or children's t-shirt. Finally, there's the no-frills one-mile Family Fun Run ticket for $22, which includes just the food and zoo admission.
Race packets can be picked up ahead of the race, as well as on race day at various locations. Participants can pick them up on November 15 at Charm City Run Locust Point from noon to 6 p.m.; November 16 at the Maryland Zoo's Main Entrance from noon to 5 p.m.; and at the zoo on the day of the race, beginning at 6:30 a.m.
Some things to know beforehand:
- This event is held rain or shine.
- The 8K starts at 8:30 a.m., and the one-mile run starts at 9:30 a.m.
- Glass containers, alcohol, tents, bicycles, and skateboards are not allowed at the zoo.
- There won't be a bag check, so consider what belongings you bring to keep with you or leave in the car.
- Zoo members get $5 off their ticket—just type in your membership number during the payment process and you're good to go!
