"Correctly" meaning without injury ... Whether you're celebrating New Year's Eve, hosting an engagement party, or having a chill Friday night, many of us enjoy opening up a bottle of the bubbly every now and then, as we should. But did you know there's a correct way to open a bottle of champagne?
(And by this, we mean opening a bottle without overflowing or causing bodily harm due to a cork-related incident.)
So, here's what you've got to do to make sure the drinks are flowing, and the injuries are kept to an absolute minimum:
How to Open a Bottle of Champagne:
Before we dive into the steps, you should know that sparkling liquors like champagne and prosecco must be handled carefully before handling. Basically, the more you move them around, the more likely you'll get overflow when opening. And we don't want that, do we?
Okay, so when you're ready to pop the bottle, grab a kitchen towel and have it on hand. This will help in the process of easing off the cork. Begin by peeling off the foil and metal cage (aka a "muselet": a French word derived from the verb meaning "to muzzle").
Then, once the cork is completely revealed, take that kitchen towel and cover the top of the champagne bottle while holding the neck of the bottle. But make sure to leave some room under the towel to give the cork room to pop off. Slowly but surely, start to wiggle the cork while keeping the towel over it. Eventually, the pressure inside the bottle will build and push the cork out.
The towel should then "catch" the cork rather than have it fly toward any breakable dishware/decor or a party guest.
Now, you're ready to serve! Cheers!
