Booze plus art? We're down!
Alcohol already alters the world around us, but prepare to enter an entirely new universe with these augmented reality summer cocktails!
Artechouse, an innovative digital art museum in Washington, D.C., partnered with Colada Shop, Dolcezza, Maketto, and Thamee bars to create a to-go version of their augmented reality drinks.
“We wanted to be creative as to how we serve and support our community, and we are thrilled to work with our fellow D.C. area small business owners and creatives on this project,” said Tati Pashtukova, cofounder of Artechouse. “Each of them brought their unique point of view and voice to this, and we truly feel it amplifies the experience. Having our small business community feel supported was a priority for this collaboration.”
These to-go cocktails and mocktails are served in a CapriSun-like pouch that each have a QR code on the packaging. Drinkers can scan these codes via Artechouse’s augmented reality app, which will make the drink's designs come to life and generate interactive floral graphics on your screen.

The app adds an interactive experience to already delicious drinks and is based off Artechouse’s current exhibit, HANAMI: Beyond the Blooms. This installation was illustrated by Japanese artist Yuko Shimizu and features cherry blossom art that reminds us of a time that once was. It allows us to reverse time to see the cherry blossoms we weren’t able to see during the COVID quarantines.
“It’s really to help bring the spirit of cherry blossom season to people no matter where they are, and to also bring innovative and interactive art to life beyond the space,” said Artechouse Director of Digital Strategies, Susan Kamenar.
The augmented reality drinks come in four different flavors:
- Applejack by Maketto – green apple, butterfly spirits vodka, boba jelly
- Butterfly Limeade by Thamee (non-alcoholic) – butterfly pea flower, cucumber, mint, lime, sugar, basil seeds
- Inle Bloom by Thamee – sake, lime, simple syrup, ginger and black pepper bitters, butterfly pea flower-infused vodka, dehydrated lime
- La Rumba by Maketto – rum, passion fruit, jasmine-palo santo syrup, lime
This isn't the first time Artechouse has added art to its booze. The same app was used at the gallery's bar to add interaction to all of its art. It ultimately combined sight, touch, sound, taste, and smell to generate a full sensory experience.
HANAMI: Beyond The Blooms is currently open to the public until September 30, 2020. The augmented reality to-go drinks will be served daily during the museum's hours from Friday to Sunday.
